I am a little afraid. Vanity was a vice not just to be deprecated, but effectively strangled at birth. Not one of them but bore the marks of having been engaged in a recent and severe conflict. The back windows of the houses (where any such existed) were strongly barricaded, and kept constantly shut; and the fortress was, furthermore, defended by high walls and deep ditches in those quarters where it appeared most exposed.
